IRE began production in December 2006. In August 2007 expansion of the plant to increase production capacity from 50 million gallons per year to 100 million gallons per year was begun by Fagen Inc. This project is scheduled to be completed by April 2009.

The Plant
The IRE plant is located on an 81 acre site in southeast Rochelle at 1900 Steward Road. The site was annexed by the city of Rochelle and granted Industry 2 zoning. The Rochelle Plan Commission and the city agreed that the use of the site for a fuel grade ethanol facility is an acceptable use within the city of Rochelle Zoning Ordinance.

The IRE facility has a positive economic effect on the entire community due to the increased value of corn, real estate taxes, and 38 new jobs created with an annual payroll of approximately $1.6 million.

Rochelle
Key local features which benefit the IRE ethanol plant include:

  • Two major highways, I-88 and I-39
  • Two major railroads, Union Pacific & Burlington Northern Santa Fe, serve the plant
  • City of Rochelle Lead Track Rail Road
      • Provides access to both UP an BNSF Railroads
      • No switching fees for cars going onto or coming off of either RR
  • Rochelle Municipal Utilities
      • Provide adequate supply and reasonable rates for water, sewer, and electricity.
  • 300,000,000 bushels of corn grown annually within 50 miles of Rochelle

Design - Build
Fagen Inc built the ethanol production facility with a nameplate capacity of 50 million gallons of fuel grade ethanol annually using ICM process engineering and technology. The team of Fagen Inc. and ICM Inc. has built more dry mill ethanol plants in the US than any other design build team.

ICM Inc. is an industry innovator who transforms new technology into practical solutions. The ICM/Phoenix Bio-Methanator waste treatment process cleans and reuses the plant’s process water providing for zero wastewater effluent. ICM technology uses the best available control technology to meet state and federal EPA standards for air quality.
