Distiller's Grains
The principal co-product of the ethanol production process is Distiller’s Grains that is the product remaining after the ethanol is removed from the fermented corn mash. Distiller’s grains are the non-fermentable components of the corn. They are rich in cereal proteins, fat, minerals, and vitamins making for a high protein, high-energy animal feed supplement marketed to the dairy, beef, swine, and poultry industries. By-pass proteins are more digestible to the animal.
Dry mill ethanol processing creates two forms of distiller's grains:
- Distillers Wet Grains with Solubles is processed corn mash that contains approximately 70% moisture. It has a shelf life of approximately three days and can be sold only to livestock producers within the immediate vicinity of an ethanol plant.
- Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles has been dried to approximately 10% moisture and is a granular product that has a yellow/tan color. It has a six month shelf life and may be sold and shipped to any market regardless of its vicinity to an ethanol plant.
Distiller’s Grains has a long history of being recognized as a highly nutritious animal feed ingredient. Its outstanding features are:
- Higher Protein & Nutrient Quality
- Concentrated Fat & Energy Levels
- Easy to ration for better feed intakes
- Cost Effective
- Provides energy comparable to corn from a non-starch source, eliminating risk of digestive disorders (i.e. acidosis)
- In the heart of the Midwestern corn and livestock production region-Distillers Grains are readily available and competitively priced to other feed ingredients.
